“We will facilitate dedicated discussions on issues concerning North Karnataka and its comprehensive development. But it is for legislators to make the best of the time given for such discussions,” Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti said in Belagavi on Wednesday.

“We cannot help it if legislators are not interested in speaking, or participating in, during the time given for discussions over issues concerning the development of North Karnataka region. I urge all legislators to actively participate in such discussions,” he told reporters at the Suvarna Soudha after inspecting the facilities being made available for the Winter Session.

The Winter Session of the State Legislature is scheduled at the Suvarna Soudha for December 8 to December 19.

“As heads of the two Houses of the Legislature, it is our job to run the two properly, by following all rules. We will also facilitate a dedicated day for discussions on development of this region, as the session is being held in Belagavi. However, to what extent legislators will make use of such an opportunity is left to them. I urge all members from the region and also from other areas to actively participate in the discussions and give suggestions to the State government. I am not saying that they are not participating but their numbers and interest should increase,” he said.

He said that legislators should not only raise their voice in the House but also follow up with the State government the assurances it makes during their speech.

Speaker U.T. Khadar said that he is happy about the rate of attendance and the quality of discussion in the House.

“We have to see it with a positive outlook. The rate of attendance in our Legislative Houses is better than that in several other States. I have seen that all the members, including the Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and Ministers and senior Opposition members are attending the session, arriving on time and staying till the end of the day. The members not only give valuable suggestions while pointing out the State government’s mistakes but also follow up on their suggestions in the following days and successive sessions. I am sure this practice will continue,” he said.
