A 21-year-old engineering student ended her life at her residence in Mansoorabad after allegedly facing pressure and harassment over dowry demands from her husband and his family.

The incident was reported on November 17 when the victim, identified as Kuncham Gangotri, was found dead inside her room by her mother, who broke open the door with the help of neighbours. A suicide note was found at the scene.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, Kuncham Saidulu, 45, a daily-wage labourer, the family had moved to Vambay Colony four years ago from Nalgonda district in search of work. Gangotri was studying in her third year of Bachelor of Technology at Brilliant Engineering College in Abdullapurmet.

Investigation revealed that Gangotri had fallen in love with Bhanu, 23, from Chinnaravirala village, and the two got married at Keesaragutta on February 26, 2025. The marriage was not accepted by either family.

On November 16, Bhanu and his brother-in-law, Bharath, visited their home and demanded ₹30 lakh and 10 tolas of gold as dowry, threatening his daughter when the family refused.

The next day, while Saidulu was at work, Gangotri locked herself in her room and ended her life. The family now suspects Bhanu, his parents Yella Swamy and Jayamma, his sister Nandini, brother-in-law Bharath, and a relative named Janrsu Venkateshewarlu of abetting her death.

A case was booked by the LB Nagar police and investigation is underway.

(Roshini suicide prevention helpline number are: 8142020033/44 and 040 66202000/2001.)
