The father of a youth accused of terrorism, who attempted self-immolation on Sunday (November 16, 2025) in south Kashmir’s Kulgam, succumbed to his injuries at a Srinagar hospital on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Bilal Ahmad Wani, father of the arrested youth, Jasir Bilal. The victim, a dry fruit seller by profession, was also detained for questioning by the police a few days ago, locals said.

After his release from detention, Wani wanted to meet his son and was allegedly denied permission. Upset by the detentions of his son and brother, he attempted self-immolation . He was first rushed to the Government Medical College, Anantnag, and later shifted to a Srinagar hospital. Officials said Wani suffered “severe” burn injuries in the act of self-immolation.

Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has alleged Wani’s son provided “technical support” to the terror network by “modifying drones” and “attempting to make rockets” ahead of the November 10 car bomb blast near the Red Fort in the national Capital, which left at least 12 people dead. Mr. Jasir Bilal has been described as an “active co-conspirator” who worked closely with Dr. Umar Nabi, a resident of Pulwama, who drove an explosive-laden car to the Red Fort. The NIA have formally arrested the youth.

Wani lived in close vicinity of Dr. Muzaffar Rather, brother of Dr. Adeel Rather, who was arrested by the J&K Police on November 6 for his alleged links with an inter-State terror module. Dr. Muzaffar Rather, security agencies believe, left India earlier this year to Dubai, and could be in Afghanistan. The police also recovered a rifle from Dr. Adeel Rather’s locker at the Government Medical College, Anantnag, where he used to work till October 24.

Meanwhile, the wife of Naveed Wani, brother of the deceased and uncle of Bilal, said her husband was innocent. “My husband is a teacher and is innocent. He should be released,” she said. Mr. Naveed Wani was also arrested by the police a few days ago.

The J&K Police have not yet issued a statement on Wani’s death.
