A 28-year-old pharmacist and his staff were arrested by Arakkonam Town police for selling narcotic tablets (Tapentadol) in Ranipet district.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as siblings G. Somnath, 28, who runs a pharmacy in Mumbai, and his staff S. Ram, 41. They were reportedly selling the banned tablets online to agents in the district.

Initial inquiry revealed that the arrested suspects have told investigators that they placed orders for the tablets from the duo. Subsequently, the banned tablets were sent through courier to them after they completed the online payment.

Police said that based on orders of Ranipet SP Ayman Jamal, a special team was formed to trace key suppliers in the trade. After analysing the mobile phones of arrested suspects, bank transactions and other documents, police traced the medical shop in Mumbai. With the support of local police, the team secured permission from a local court to search the pharmacy and its warehouse.

During the searches, police said they found documents related to the sale of tablets to agents in the district. The duo was brought to Arakkonam and produced before a local court. They were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
