Nine persons were killed and 32 others were injured in a major explosion caused “accidentally” inside Srinagar’s Nowgam Police Station on Friday (November 14, 2025) night, J&K Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Saturday (November 15).
According to the police, one State Investigation Agency (SIA) official, two revenue officials part of the magistrate’s team, three forensic team personnel, and two crime photographers, and one tailor were among the dead.
Calling it an accidental blast, DGP Prabhat said “any other speculation into the course of this incident is unnecessary”.

A huge quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and resin was recovered from Haryana’s Faridabad during raids earlier in the week, as part of the investigation into an inter-State terror module case, he said.
“This recovery like the rest of the other recoveries was transported and kept securely in an open area of Nowgam. As part of the procedure, samples of the recovery were to be forwarded to the forensic lab. Given the voluminous nature of the recovery, an inquiry was going on by a Forensic Science Laboratory team yesterday and the day before,” DGP Prabhat said.
Given the unstable and sensitive nature, the sampling process and handling was conducted with extreme caution by the FSL team. “However, unfortunately, during this course last night around 11.20 p.m. an accidental explosion took place. The cause for this unfortunate incident is being inquired into,” the J&K DGP added.
Of the 27 police personnel injured, two revenue officials and three civilians were receiving medical treatment.
Building nearby the police station were also severely damaged due to the impact of the blast. “The extent of damage is being ascertained,” the DGP said.
