The process of recuiting 18,000 teachers in the State — 12,000 for government schools and 6,000 for government aided schools — is underway, said Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa.

Participating in the centenary celebrations of Government Higher Primary School at Beluru Kusuburu village in Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu district on Saturday (November 8, 2025), Mr. Bangarappa said the government will soon take up the appointment of selected teachers to government and government aided schools in the State.

With a view to strengthen government schools in Karnataka, the State Government had introduced pre-primary classes like Lower Kindergarten and Upper Kindergarten (LKG and UKG) in government schools.

Karnataka Public Schools

The government had also approved the establishiment of about 900 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS), which are model-government-run schools that provide education from pre-primary like LKG and UKG right upto second Pre University (II PUC) under one roof with options for English and Kannada medium.

One KPS school will come up in the jurisdiction of each Gram Panchayat in the state and the government will ensure free transportation to the students, Mr. Bangarappa said.

Assurign priority to quality education in government schools, the Minister for School Education said new buildings will be constructed wherever required while electricity is being supplied free of cost to government schools. Also, special classes are being held in the evenings to improve quality and performance of the students, he said.

Three-tiered examination policy

A total of 1.16 crore students are presently studying in Lower Kindergarten to Class 12 in government, aided and unaided schools in the State. While there are a total of 46,000 government schools, there are 57,000 aided schools.

While CCTV cameras were being installed to monitor SSLC and II PUC examinations, Mr. Bangarappa said a three-tiered examination policy has been implemented in the state so that the students are not affected and examinations are conducted at 25-day intervals. “Under this system, a total of 1.16 lakh students had passed this year,” he said.

Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda said teachers had a major responsibility in shaping the future of students. While Government schools were improving, he called upon the teachers to make sincere efforts to provide quality education.

Pointing out that former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao had completed his primary education at the Beluru Government School and went on to become the state’s CM, Mr. Gowda said many students from the school were employed in different places across India and abroad.

Deputy Director of Pre University (DDPU), Kodagu, Chidananda Murthy and Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Kodagu, Basavaraju were also present on the occasion.
