A memorandum of understanding has been signed for the skill development centre that Bharat Petroleum Limited-Kochi Refinery (BPCL-KR) proposes to set up at Kalamassery at an investment of ₹100 crore.

Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve announced the institute, which is to be established on land owned by Travancore Cochin Chemicals (TCC) adjacent to the Container Terminal Road in Kalamassery. “The institute is being set up to help students and job aspirants to develop their skills, considering the proximity to major industrial units in Kalamassery like FACT, TCC, BPCL, and Cochin Shipyard Limited,” said Mr. Rajeeve. An annual recurring expense of around ₹10 crore is expected towards the accommodation, food, and uniforms of students.

The institute, spanning 1.10 lakh sq. ft., will come up on a 4.50-acre campus provided by TCC under the Industries department in Kalamassery. Courses will be offered in subjects such as advanced welding with robotics, precision manufacturing, robotics and automation, electric home automation, industrial transportation, water management and modern plumbing, advanced computing, climate and environment management, media and entertainment, and smart manufacturing. The courses will have a duration of three to six months, and around 1,600 enrolments will be permitted annually. The institute will function in association with organisations in the field of skill development such as ASAP and NTTF.

Industries department Principal Secretary A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, BPCL chairman Sanjay Khanna, District Collector G. Priyanka, Eloor municipal chairperson A.D. Sujil, BPCL executive director D. Parthasarathy, and TCC managing director R. Rajeev were present.
