The long-stalled 73-km Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC), previously called the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), is finally back on track, with the government preparing to invite civil work tenders worth ₹7,000 crore by March 2026.

The project will be divided into three construction packages, each valued at around ₹2,500 crore.

The corridor, being developed by the Bengaluru Business Corridor Limited (BBCL), a special purpose vehicle, is designed to ease congestion by creating an access-controlled eight-lane road around the city, flanked by four-lane service roads. It will connect major highways including Tumakuru Road, Ballari Road, Old Madras Road, and Hosur Road.

Officials confirmed to The Hindu that land acquisition for Phase 1 is nearing its final stage. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being drawn up by Assystem, the French engineering consultancy.

Tenders will be invited once around 80% of the land has been acquired and once bids are floated, it will take approximately three months to finalise the contractors. From the date of land possession, the selected agencies will get 30 months to complete construction, the officials said.

The government is yet to decide the execution model- Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) or Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT)- and is also examining the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) followed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which allows toll collection to be handled separately.

The project also requires another 500 acres for interchanges and cloverleaf junctions. Earlier, three cloverleafs were planned, but the number has now increased to five to handle future traffic volumes.

The project has faced resistance from farmers and landowners, who have raised objections to the compensation package, the commercial development component of the corridor, and what they have described as the unfair use of the outdated 1894 Land Acquisition Act instead of the 2013 Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act.
