Air Force suggested State government acquire the contiguous land for development of the civil terminal at the airfield at Adilabad. file
The State government has directed Adilabad District Collector to acquire 700 acres land for development of joint-user airport in the district headquarters town.
The initiative is aimed at fulfilling the long-cherished dream of denizens of Adilabad district and its surrounding areas for air passenger connectivity, official sources said.
As part of its ambitious plans to take up development of six regional airports in Telangana, the State government had appointed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as a consultant to provide consultancy services for preparing the Techno-Economic Feasibility Reports (TEFRs) for the proposed six airports.
Consequently, the TEFRs were submitted by AAI indicating feasibility in respect of Adilabad district subject to certain clearances. Official sources said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has already agreed in principle to the State government’s proposal for civil aircraft operations from Adilabad airfield in April this year.
It may be mentioned that an old airstrip of the IAF is located on the periphery of Adilabad town. The IAF suggested that the said airfield could be developed as a joint-user airfield with the AAI acquiring contiguous land for civil terminal and other requisite infrastructure, a communique dated April 1, 2025, from the Ministry of Defence said.
