Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has said that conventional universities have lost value with the increase in their numbers in the State. “There were four universities in the State. What happens when the number of universities goes up to 40? Universities have lost value,” he said in response to a question with regard to the newly set up Hassan University.
Mr. Byre Gowda, who is also the Minister in charge of Hassan district, said that once upon a time, Mysuru University had recognition worldwide. Karnataka University at Dharwad also had a similar reputation and these institutions produced great talents; however, hardly any university meets that standard now, the Minister said. “We are in an era of tough competition. Forget employment; the chances of landing an interview despite having a degree from a reputed college of a reputed university are rare. When this is the situation, is it right to open a university in every city? What would be the future of students?”, he wondered.
Further, Mr. Byre Gowda said that no children sought new universities.“In some universities, there are no applicants for jobs because the recruiters will have to remain in that place all through their service. Once recruited, they had to remain in Kolar. Can you expect the highly talented faculty interested in research to take the job? As a result, quality will suffer,” he stated.
