A private tannery godown at Thuthipattu village near Ambur town in Tirupattur, off the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH-48), was gutted after a fire broke out in the facility, resulting in a thick smoke in the area.

Police said that it was around 2 a.m. when a few residents of the area noticed the thick smoke coming from the godown. Immediately, along with other residents, they tried to douse the fire but the blaze spread to the entire facility.

Based on an alert, a 10-member firefighters’ team from Ambur, Pernambut and Vaniyambadi towns rushed to the location. Before they could reach the spot, the fire spread to the entire godown. After nearly three hours, fire fighters doused it.

However, the entire facility got completely gutted. An estimate of leather goods destroyed in the godown is being carried out. Residents complained of severe eye irritation, especially among children and senior citizens, due to smoke from the unit.

A case was registered by Ambur Taluk police. Police said that the actual cause of the accident is being ascertained. Further probe is under way.
