Two persons were killed and several others sustained serious injuries when a boiler exploded at a decor panel plywood factory in the Ananthapuram industrial centre near Kumbala in Kasaragod on Monday evening (October 27).

One of the deceased was identified as Nasir, a native of Assam. The identity of the other person is yet to be confirmed.

The explosion, which occurred around 7.10 p.m., triggered panic in the area as the sound of the blast was heard several kilometres away. Rescue operations were launched immediately by fire force units from Kasaragod and Uppala, assisted by police officials and residents. Several of the injured were shifted to hospitals in Mangaluru.

A senior police officer said the cause of the boiler explosion was yet to be ascertained. The police have launched an investigation.
