A gang of six bike-borne assailants allegedly opened fire at a gram panchayat member in an attempt to kill the latter over an old rivalry on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Sunday, October 26.

The victim, identified as Saleem Pasha, 50, was a resident of Islampur and a member of the Kannegowdanahalli gram panchayat. He sustained gunshot injuries on his right arm, following which he was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is reportedly out of danger at the moment.

The incident occurred around 6.30 p.m., when Pasha was chatting with local people outside a shop at 7th cross in Islampura. The Nelamangala Rural police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the assailants.

Police suspect that the attack was carried out due to a political rivalry. The assailants used country-made guns in the attack, the police said.

“We have gathered some clues and are working on it to track down the accused,” a senior police officer stated.
