The State government has decided to wait for the outcome of the proceedings related to 42 per cent reservation to backward classes in local bodies, pending in the Telangana High Court before taking a final decision on the polls.
The State Cabinet, which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday discussed the issue at length. The discussion follows the dismissal of the special leave petition filed by the State government in the Supreme Court.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the government had approached the Supreme Court on enhancing reservations to backward classes after the High Court’s direction but the Apex Court referred it back to the High Court. “The High Court is expected to take up hearing on the matter on November 3. The Cabinet has decided to wait for the outcome before finalising the future course of action,” he said.
Accordingly, the State Cabinet had decided to meet on November 7 to consider the outcome of the High Court proceedings and take a final call. The Cabinet, he said, had approved the relaxation of the two-child norm for contestants of the local bodies elections. It was decided to promulgate an ordinance in this direction as the Assembly was not in session, and it would be sent to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma for his approval so that the relaxation would be made operational.
