Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed, former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and president of the influential socio-religious organisation Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, passed away early on Sunday. He was 78.

According to the Jamiat, Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir is survived by his wife, six sons and a daughter. He passed away following a brief illness. He was also a member of the aamilah (central working committee) of the organisation.

Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir served as Chairman of the State Haj Committee in undivided Andhra Pradesh and served as a Member of the Legislative Council beginning in 2009. The funeral prayers were performed at Kanz-ul-Uloom Markaz Masjid in Shaheen Nagar, and he was laid to rest with State honours at Risala Khursheed Jah in Musheerabad.

In the run-up to the 2023 elections, the Jamiat had extended its support to the Congress, particularly in districts outside Hyderabad.
