Several leaders of the Trinamool Congress have followed Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and made contributions for flood relief in North Bengal, after the party’s second in command donated  ₹1 lakh to the State government.

The floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains on October 5 ravaged Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and other districts of North Bengal claiming more than 30 lives and left thousands homeless.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has visited the region twice in the past two weeks and taken stock of rehabilitation efforts to provide succour to the people affected by the natural disaster. The State government under Ms. Banerjee has sought donations under West Bengal State Disaster Management Authority (WBSDMA) Fund for flood relief.

Responding to the Chief Minister’s appeal for assistance, Diamond Harbour MP donated ₹1 lakh for flood relief calling upon everyone to rise to the occasion and help rebuild the shattered lives.

“Unforeseen floods and landslides have devastated parts of the northern districts of West Bengal, bringing immense suffering and causing severe loss to lives, livelihoods and property…. In solidarity with the people of my state, I have contributed ₹1,00,000 to the WBSDMA Fund. In these testing times, every act of kindness matters. I appeal to all to come forward and generously contribute to stand beside those who have lost so much in this man-made tragedy,” Mr. Banerjee had posted on social media.

After Mr. Banerjee donated ₹1 lakh, senior Trinamool leaders like MPs like Mahua Moitra, Derek O’Brien, Ritabrata Banerjee, and Prakash Chik Baraik each contributed ₹1 lakh to the relief fund. The party MPs have announced their contribution on social media.

Others, including MLAs Paresh Chandra Adhikary, Khokan Das, Nisith Kumar Malik, have also donated to the WBSDMA and posted the information on social media.

The West Bengal government has also appointed a State-level Task Force for relief, restoration and reconstruction of areas affected by floods in North Bengal. On Saturday (October 18) the task force held its first meeting where Ministers of the State government as well as senior officials held its meeting.

According to the State government in Darjeeling, 19 relief shelters housing 640 persons are operational, with ongoing distribution of essentials. ‘Over 200 damage assessment teams and 21 outreach camps are assisting with housing and infrastructure damage assessment and re- issuance of documents,” a statement by West Bengal said on Saturday.
