The Tamil Nadu government will consider a representation seeking to constitute a board to protect orphanages and mental health homes run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan said in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Thursday (January 22, 2026).

The Minister was responding to concerns raised by VCK MLA M. Sinthanai Selvan. The legislator said NGOs, mostly from minority communities, were running orphanages and mental health homes, and claimed that of late, there have been instigations against them and they are being targeted with hate.

Mr. Selvan, stating that the neighbouring State of Kerala has a board to protect orphanages and homes, sought for such a board in Tamil Nadu as well. The Minister said the State government was monitoring such homes and would consider Mr. Selvan’s request and take steps.
