A four-year-old from Thalakkulathoor in Kozhikode district died of shigellosis at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) wing of the Government Medical College Hospital here on Saturday morning (June 6).

According to Health department sources, she had been undergoing treatment for fever and diarrhoea at the hospital since June 1. Her family members told the doctors that the girl complained of uneasiness on May 31 after she had outside food the previous day. She was taken first to a couple of private hospitals near her village and later to the Government Hospital for Women and Children at Kottaparamba in Kozhikode city on June 1. From there, she was referred to the IMCH. She had been in the intensive care unit thereafter. The death was recorded on Saturday morning.

Health workers, meanwhile, held chlorination of water resources in Thalakkulathoor and conducted awareness sessions.

Meanwhile, a two-year-old child from Pantheerankavu, undergoing treatment for shigellosis at the hospital, was discharged on June 2. A 10-year-old from Purameri is still under treatment there. Both were admitted to the hospital in May last week. Their lab results turned positive for the water-borne infection on Saturday.
