Heavy rain lashed parts of Hyderabad and many districts of Telangana in the evening, disrupting normal life and flooding low-lying areas, on Thursday.
The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Hayathnagar with 11.5 cm by 9 p.m. In other parts of Telangana, Mallampally in Mulugu recorded 19 cm by 9 p.m., while Yacharam in Rangareddy district recorded 18 cm, Abdullapurmet on the outskirts of Hyderabad logged 12.4 cm, according to data from the automatic weather stations of Telangana State Development Planning Society.
The evening rain in Hyderabad disrupted traffic flow in the Western part of the city leading to bumper to bumper traffic.
Taking stock of the situation, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy instructed the entire administration to remain on alert.
In view of the threat of floods, the Chief Minister instructed the authorities to evacuate people living in dilapidated houses and shift them to safer areas, according to a statement.
The CM reportedly asked the authorities of HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, Fire, Traffic and Police wings to take up rescue operations in a coordinated manner without causing any trouble during heavy rains.
For Friday, the India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rain “at isolated places in Nirmal, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Jangoan, Suryapet, Hyderabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Mahabubabad, Warangal districts of Telangana. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of Telangana.”
