The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) would hold its Dikshant Parade on Friday (October 17, 2025), marking the culmination of the Basic Course training for the 77th Regular Recruits (RR) batch of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer trainees.

A total of 190 officer trainees will take part in the ceremony, including 174 IPS probationers and 16 foreign officers from Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives.

65 women officers

Among them are 65 women officers, signalling a growing representation of women in the higher ranks of the police service. Daljit Singh Chawdhary, Director General of the Border Security Force, will review the parade and address the probationers.

Academic backgrounds

The current batch represents a diverse academic background and a broad professional mix. Engineering graduates make up half of the trainee officers (50%), followed by science (20%), arts (17%), and 5% each from commerce and medicine, while law graduates account for 3%.

Of the 174 IPS probationers, 112 are men and 62 women, who form 64% and 36% respectively. A majority of 133 trainees are unmarried, while 41 are married. The average age is 28 years. Notably, 51% of the batch had previous work experience before joining the service, while 49% are fresh entrants.

The 77 RR batch began its training journey on December 9, 2024, after completing the 15-week Foundation Course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie. Since joining the Academy, they have undergone 45 weeks of Phase-I training in Hyderabad, which blends rigorous academic learning, field exposure, and physical endurance exercises.

After the parade, the probationers will proceed to Delhi for various attachments with Central Police Organisations, Central Armed Police Forces, and the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training. During this phase, they will meet the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister, National Security Advisor, and chiefs of central police and armed forces. They will also spend time with the Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force, before returning for a 29-week District Practical Training in their respective cadres. The final leg, Phase-II of their basic training, begins on June 22, 2026, at the Academy.

What is taught during the training?

The training curriculum at SVPNPA is extensive and multidimensional. Indoor subjects cover the new criminal laws alongside investigation, forensics, information technology, ethics, human rights, and police management. Outdoor training includes physical fitness, weapon handling, yoga, unarmed combat, equitation, and field craft.

Special attachments form an integral part of the course. Probationers undergo jungle survival training with the Greyhounds in Telangana, rock climbing with the ITBP, and advanced weapons practice with the BSF. They also participate in bandobast duties during major public events, and in sensitisation visits to orphanages and shelters for human trafficking victims. Leadership and management modules are conducted at IIM Ahmedabad, while forensic exposure comes from the National Forensic Sciences University.

As the probationers march on the parade ground this week, it will not only mark the end of their training at the country’s premier police institution but also the beginning of their service in the field.
